Ravings From The Bog

Hidden Belfast – Lower Garfield Street

LwrGarfieldSt1It has been some time since I posted a Hidden Belfast picture, but I thought I’d better get my skates on and take these pictures before these derelict buildings come down. The first gives you the view of the front of the building which has been affected by commercial development over the years and is now “on it’s last legs”. The detail on the “balcony” and the cornices are beautiful, or at least were, before the onslaught of 100,000 pigeons over the years!

The second, and much more interesting picture, is the one from behind which was the first aspect to attract my interest. Hidden from the street are a couple of spires complete with what look like flag poles, various chimney stacks and assorted dormer windows. It is a view of haphazard additions over the years as well as representing good solid build quality. Many of these old red brick building are fast disappearing in the centre of Belfast and are worth documenting. They have seen a lot of history and unfortunately, I am unaware of most of it. What I can remember is visiting a night-club on the first floor back in the early 1980s – but it’s all very vague!

LwrGarfieldSt2This view can be seen from the car park, which has access from North St. Have a closer look if you get the chance; it’s worth it!

Hearing VoicesI was lucky enough to catch a great podcast from NPR’s Hearing Voices series (available on iTunes) yesterday morning on my to work. Three separate stories, each of them inspirational in its own way, which gave me an insight into different aspects of strangers’ lives. Horrific and fascinating in equal measure, Steve Fugate’s story especially, drove home one man’s challenge to change things and help others following two particularly tragic events in his life. Really worth a listen! It’s called Happy Families.

Love life!

Sammy Wilson Shows His True Colours

bigotry-and-racismNo surprises here then! Our Sammy has decided he wants Northern Ireland to return to the bad old days of bigotry and racism. He has actually said that employers should favour local people over foreign nationals when it comes to employment. Sammy, ever heard of the Fair Employment Commission? It’s no surprise that Poles, Lithuanians, Asians and others are still being assaulted and burnt out of their houses in the more Neanderthal parts of NI, with encouragement like this from one of our “leaders”. Embarrassing!

Our Sammy!

Chinese New Year – Year Of The Ox

year-of-the-oxThat Obama chap seems to get everything just right! In another strangely fortunate turn of events, Chinese across the world are celebrating the Year of the Ox. The ox, one of 12 animals in the Chinese zodiac, symbolises calm, hard work, resolve and tenacity. All qualities that Obama will need in abundance to undo the damage caused by his predecessor. The Year of the Rat was in 2008. I know who the rat symbolises but he’s away back to Crawford, Texas and obscurity hopefully!

BBC Finally Loses Plot – Zionist Lobby Strikes Again

Saddest Picture EverHas the BBC finally lost the plot? It would appear so. They’ve even adopted the Israeli governments tactic of lying straight to our faces, about an agreement with other major media groups not to hold a donation campaign. Sky BSB vehemently denied ever making any such arrangement. We’ve come to expect this pro-Israeli bias from their coverage of the slaughter of innocents in Gaza over recent weeks. They should be demanding that the Israeli government face war crimes tribunals (but then they did nothing about the Sabra and Shatila massacres back in 1982 either), or at least be asking the obvious questions, like why aren’t the Israelis being made to finance the rebuilding of Gaza as they obliterated it in the first place. Too many Zionists in high places, methinks!

Karen Matthews – The Case For Sterilisation

Matthews IdiotEven Karen Matthews’ family is complaining that the eight year sentence she received for kidnapping and hiding her her daughter while hoping to claim the reward, is too soft. I believe that in this case of child abuse, and in many others, parents and step-parents and partners proved to be involved should receive a hefty jail sentence AND be forcibly sterilised. And I’ll supply the rusty scissors!
