Hearing VoicesI was lucky enough to catch a great podcast from NPR’s Hearing Voices series (available on iTunes) yesterday morning on my to work. Three separate stories, each of them inspirational in its own way, which gave me an insight into different aspects of strangers’ lives. Horrific and fascinating in equal measure, Steve Fugate’s story especially, drove home one man’s challenge to change things and help others following two particularly tragic events in his life. Really worth a listen! It’s called Happy Families.

Love life!

Sammy Wilson Shows His True Colours

bigotry-and-racismNo surprises here then! Our Sammy has decided he wants Northern Ireland to return to the bad old days of bigotry and racism. He has actually said that employers should favour local people over foreign nationals when it comes to employment. Sammy, ever heard of the Fair Employment Commission? It’s no surprise that Poles, Lithuanians, Asians and others are still being assaulted and burnt out of their houses in the more Neanderthal parts of NI, with encouragement like this from one of our “leaders”. Embarrassing!

Karen Matthews – The Case For Sterilisation

Matthews IdiotEven Karen Matthews’ family is complaining that the eight year sentence she received for kidnapping and hiding her her daughter while hoping to claim the reward, is too soft. I believe that in this case of child abuse, and in many others, parents and step-parents and partners proved to be involved should receive a hefty jail sentence AND be forcibly sterilised. And I’ll supply the rusty scissors!

Prince Harry Windsor – Clueless!

Prince Harry WTF?What is going on in that young man’s head? I understand that he has had all sorts of disadvantages such as a sheltered life at home, at school and in the services, but surely he has someone in his circle who is grounded enough to keep him from making such puerile gaffes as using racist nicknames and dressing up as a Nazi, given the exposure he has to those who want to use his fame to score some money by selling information about him to the press.

Perhaps, given the sheltered life he has led, he didn’t learn racism at home (whoops, forgot about Grandad!), but it reflects the people he attended school with (likely – public school types definitely feel they’re better than the rest of us) or those he was in the services with (very likely – racist by nature!).

Either way. he needs to stop.

Halloween – What Are The Churches Afraid Of?

I have a seven year old daughter, who is frightened out of her wits by almost anything at the best of times. For example, when she went to see Happy Feet, she almost crawled over up and over me into the row of seats behind us in the cinema when the little penguin was being chased across the ice by the seal (the sequence WAS very loud, to be fair).

At Halloween however, she loves to dress up as a (good!) witch and isn’t afraid of her friends’ costumes, but while both our local churches are having parties at Halloween for children, they’re not permitted to dress up in Halloween-themed outfits. The local Presbyterian outfit demand only biblical characters and the Elim crowd allow only Disney or Superheroes to be featured.

Given that Paganism has died out, more or less, in these parts, I’m unsure what it is that the churches have to fear by allowing this now-innocent event to become a bit of fun for the kids.

Perhaps the church-folk would be better served spending time ensuring that their financial investment managers are investing ethically rather than buying shares in companies and institutions that promote  arms-dealing etc, than ruining what innocent fun the kids have left?

What do you think?
